Watching: Dances With … uh … Dogs

Or a spicy dramedy.

Dear Watchers,

John Oliver bid farewell to 2020 on the season finale of his show last night, and while I share the overall desire to close whatever chapter we’re currently in, the rest of us still have well over a month of this cursed year to go. The segment contains adult language, Adam Driver and a big explosion.

Stay safe.

Polina Ilina practices dog dancing in an episode of “We Are the Champions.”Netflix

‘We Are the Champions’

When to watch: Starting Tuesday, on Netflix.

If you like documentaries about obscure, competitive subcultures, watch this new six-part series. Dog dancing, cheese rolling, yo-yo, extreme hair styling — people are entitled to be into whatever they’re into, and the episodes balance amused, wry narration with the hard work and enthusiasm of the participants. Because the installments are only a half-hour each, these are casual snippets more than involved pieces, and sometimes the show zips past questions it’s not equipped to handle. (What’s going on with gender equity in the yo-yo world, exactly?) Still, passion and expertise will always be their own, mighty draws.

I have the TV version of that thing where you are hungry, but nothing sounds good

Billie Piper in a scene from “I Hate Suzie.”HBO Max

‘I Hate Suzie’

When to watch: Starting Thursday, on HBO Max.

Billie Piper stars in this British dramedy about a midrange celebrity, Suzie Pickles, whose personal photos are hacked, sending her career and marriage into turmoil. There’s plenty of showbiz material here, along with intriguing friendship dynamics, spicy-gossip energy, some daring format moves, terrible but interesting character behavior and a real sense of wild abandon.
